Home Theatre Maintenance

If you’ve really invested in a great home theatre, you want to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your system, and it’s important to know how to maintain your speakers and amplifier to increase their lifespan…

We’ve put together a list of do’s and don’ts in home theatre maintenance to make sure you’re giving your system the TLC it deserves.

Setup

The best way to avoid problems with your home theatre down the line, would be to have your initial setup done professionally. If you’ve invested in a decent home theatre, chances are that it’s not a plug and play system. Professional installers will ensure your amplifier power is correctly paired with your speakers so that both components are protected.  Another advantage of having your system setup professionally is that your speakers are at the optimal setup for your space.

As for speaker placement, it’s important for your speakers to be correctly mounted and secured, and placed in an area that is not overly exposed to dampness and moisture.

Cleaning

Your speakers will need a very delicate touch when it comes to cleaning.  Speakers generally have a wood finish which can be dusted and cleaned with normal furniture polish, but speaker grills and speakers cones should be gently dusted with a small, soft brush.  Using furniture polish or a wet cloth on your speaker cone should definitely be avoided.  When it comes to the cleanliness of your amplifier, this is where you need to be rather careful.  No furniture polish or dampness should go near any of the back components or air vents of your amplifier – this could cause a short in the electronics and could damage the amplifier quite badly. However, dusting the top of the amplifier can be done with a soft cloth. Before you begin with any cleaning, it’s very important that all components are switch off.

Usage

It’s important to use your home theatre for its intended purpose. That may seem obvious, but home theatres are designed for the purpose of watching tv, movies and/or as a stereo music system.  Playing music on your home theatre system really loudly for extended periods of time while entertaining can overheat your amplifier and effect the longevity of your speakers. Having a dedicated entertainment system will be a lot more effective and will preserve the life of your home theatre.

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t get many years out of a great home theatre system if you ensure proper care, usage and maintenance.  If you’re looking for a new home theatre or if you suspect your home theatre could use a professional touch, visit www.soundx.co.za for more information.
